Children’s Allowance
Children’s allowance is passe`! This is my opinion. This is my belief. Let me say this again. Children’s allowance is passe`!
The definition of the word “passe`” is “no longer current” or “out-of-date.” I believe that children’s allowance is no longer current and out-of-date.
I believe this with all my heart. Let me tell you why.
To give children’s allowance for no other reason than “just because” does not do your children any good. Who else is going to give your children money “just because?” No one will! Certainly not an employer! ;o)
Giving an allowance can lead to a sense of entitlement.
The word “entitlement” means giving someone a right to something. Giving children’s allowance is preparing your children for what? The right to have money? No one has that right. They may have the want, but not the right. ;o)
Children need to learn that money is to be earned, not given. If children want money, they should think of creative ways to earn the money. By encouraging your children to become creative entrepreneurs, you will be increasing their confidence and self-esteem. What parent doesn’t want to do that? ;o)
Some parents worry that they must give children’s allowance because their children are too shy or not creative enough to think of ways to earn their own money. Nonsense! With time and patience, any child can be encouraged to earn his or her own money.
Still, the debate goes on and on – giving children’s allowance or not giving children’s allowance. I became SOOOO involved in this debate that I decided to bring in the experts. If you want your children to move out of your house and live on their own, then money lessons are needed. Your children need to learn how to earn, donate, invest, save and spend their money wisely. You want your children to follow a path of financial success and live life with as few money stresses as possible.
Giving children’s allowance will not help your children grow up secure with their money. Until your children learn what it takes to earn their own money and manage it, how can they learn to take care of themselves? No, no way! Children’s allowance is just SOOOO passe` – it went out, in my opinion, with other outdated articles, like big, clumsy boom boxes and floppy disks.
I believe in entrepreneurial skills and creative thinking over children’s allowance. I believe in fostering financial independence by helping children find kid-friendly, creative ways to make money. I want children to have a good handle on how to create income, manage it, invest it, give some away, and how to make their money work hard for them, not work hard for their money.
Foster financial independence by empowering your children to open their minds to the possibility of achieving a goal (having money) and give them the responsibility for creating a solution. You won’t regret your decision!
Don’t give children’s allowance – it’s SOOOO passe`! Here’s to encouraging children to create their own income and manage it well enough so that they can leave the nest and function as financially secure young adults.
